# Projects

> Group AI systems by team or product, with a lead and members, and see their spend and posture together.

A project groups AI systems, for example by team or product. It has a name, a description, an optional lead and members. An AI system is in one project at most. A project is a grouping only: every member still sees every AI system, whatever projects they are in.

**Projects** in the sidebar lists each project with its lead, members, how many AI systems it has, its spend this month and its posture.

## Create a project

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Projects">
    Open **Projects** in the sidebar and choose **New project**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name it">
    Enter a name and, if you want, a description and a lead. Select **Create project**. The project opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add AI systems">
    On **Overview**, choose **Add AI systems** and pick them. One already in another project moves over.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Names are unique in your organization, ignoring capital letters. The lead is any active member, and also becomes a member. A project can have no lead.

## The project's page

* **Overview**: **AI systems**, **Posture**, **With gaps** and, with the [AI Gateway](/ai-gateway/overview), **Spend this month**, then the project's AI systems with their stage, rating and posture. The cross on a row takes that AI system out of the project.
* **Members**: who works on the project, with its lead marked **Lead**. **Add members** adds active members of your organization.
* **Cost and usage**: the [cost and usage report](/reports) for the project's AI systems only, with the same date range, charts, rankings, export and print. Shown to owners and admins, when your organization has the AI Gateway.

A project's posture is the average [posture](/ai-systems/posture) of its AI systems that are not retired. A project with none shows a dash. Spend this month counts from the first of the month, UTC. When its AI systems have monthly budgets, **Spend this month** shows against them added up, and selecting it opens [Budgets](/ai-gateway/budgets-and-limits#see-every-budget). That total is not enforced: each AI system's own budget is.

## Move an AI system

On an AI system's page, open the actions menu and choose **Move to project**, then pick a project or **No project**. The header shows the project the AI system is in, and **About** names it, or offers **Add to a project**.

## Find work by project

Once your organization has a project, a **Project** filter appears on:

* **AI systems**, with **No project** for those in none;
* **Reporting**, every tab, and **AI Gateway**, **Request log**.

## Who can do what

| What you can do | Owner | Admin | The project's lead | Member |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| See projects, their AI systems, spend and posture | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Create, rename and delete a project, and choose its lead | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Change the description, add and remove members | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Move an AI system into or out of a project | Yes | Yes | No | No |

## Delete a project

Open the actions menu on the project's page and choose **Delete**. Its AI systems stay, in no project, and its members leave it. The delete is recorded in the [audit trail](/audit-trail).

A member removed from your organization leaves every project. If they were a lead, the project has no lead until you choose one.

Projects are part of Altrum's governance, alongside AI systems. An organization with only the AI Gateway has no projects.
